Wandering the World

Stories and tips from around the world.

About the Author

I work as a web developer in Leicester - a city in England. When I'm not working I'm usually either running or travelling the world with my camera. Here on this blog you can read a little about both! Over the years I've visited all seven continents, and have now visited about 15% of the world. It'd be nice to think that one day it may be possible to see all of these.

I've run over ten marathons so far, and have started to catch up with the number of ultra marathons. Oddly my favourite distances are 10K and Marathon so I'm usually working on both speed and distance.

I started blogging in the 90s, before it was called blogging; I used to keep track of project in what was called a .plan. Hopefully this current blog which has now been going for over ten years won't be as boring!

Why jedi58?

Some of you might know me best as "jedi58", a handle I've used for many years. If you've ever wondered where it comes from, then I'll have to start back in the early 90s. I used to play a lot of Duke Nukem 3D games over LAN, and at the time used the name "anubis", the Egyptian God of the dead. An appropriate name for gaming I thought.

When I switched to online gaming in the early days, still in the 90s, I soon found someone else using the same name and rather than let it get confusing I decided to use a different name. Something that would be unique. I thought for a while, and thought how my blog back then was my AOL handle - Thrawn40000. The Thrawn part was named after a Star Wars character, and the 40,000 was in reference to Warhammer 40,000 - two of my biggest interests at the time.

So it seemed to me like a Star Wars themed handle would be a good idea, something better though; but I couldn't just be "jedi" - it'd already be used by other people. To make it unique I wanted a number. When it comes to the world of online it's recommended you don't use any personally identifiable information. I didn't particularly care, so I used 58. The 58 had two meanings: it was the house number I lived at during this time, and is also my birthday in US date format. So there it was - I had a new handle to use
